Hello 2G Families, We had a wonderful first week in our classroom! This year we have such an amazing group of students, and we have been spending time building our class community. We will continue to learn more about each other and our classroom routines and expectations in the coming weeks. I am hoping you arrived here by clicking on the hyperlink I put in our newsflash email. If you had not subscribed, I added your email to the list. If you prefer a different email address to be used, simply unsubscribe from the email I sent you (the unsubscribe link is at the bottom) and subscribe using your preferred email on this webpage. If you did not receive a newsflash email, please begin by checking your junk email folder. If you still don’t find an email from me, subscribe to the newsflash on this page. Each week I will post what our learning focus for the following week will be. As well, I will add pictures of students from the classroom, unless you did not give photo permission. Please let me know at any time if you do not want me to post pictures. It is a fun way to truly take a peek at our week (don’t worry, I will never use student names). As well, I like to end the post with upcoming dates that are important. I try to keep the blog brief, as I know that we all have full lives. I hope you find the information as a guide to discuss your child’s learning. Feel free to leave comments, but please note that they are public to all. Ask away if I forgot something, as others are probably wondering as well! Next week we will begin our first week in the Wonders reading program. We have decided to stretch this first week of study over two weeks. This allows for the extra time students often need to learn how to use the second grade materials, and gives us the opportunity to practice reading routines. We will learn about reading groups, word sorts, new games on the iPad, logging onto the Wonders website, and expectations for silent reading. Next week will also be our first official week in Everyday Math. We will focus on number lines. I have included a great link that helps provide some background about how we will use number lines in the classroom. They are a wonderful tool for counting, adding, subtracting, estimating, and understanding the magnitude of a number. Check out http://www.scholastic.com/parents/blogs/scholastic-parents-learning-toolkit/number-lines for more information and resources you can use at home. We have begun to discuss our hopes and dreams in Second Grade, and will begin to set goals to help us achieve these. Along with this, we have focused on the importance of growth mindset. This encompasses the idea that mistakes help us learn, that learning is the product of hard work, and that we must work both creatively and collaboratively to solve problems. Here is another link to a short clip that describes growth mindset in the elementary classroom: https://www.mindsetkit.org/growth-mindset-parents/learn-about-growth-mindset/what-is-growth-mindset-parents In writing this week, the students are completing their first writing piece, The Best Part of Me. We launched this writing project after being inspired by the book with the same title. This allows students to think about themselves in a positive light, boosting self-concepts. The display is sure you won’t want to miss at Back to School Night Speaking of Back to School Night…Save the date! Our Back to School night will be on September 20th from 6:40-7:05 pm, and students are welcome to attend. Since we will have young ones, I will do a brief presentation, then allow the kiddos to show you their work. I look forward to seeing you! One last thing: Our room can get very hot! Please send students with a water bottle each day. We keep these out on our desks and refill often. It is a good idea to dress in layers, as even when it is cool outside, we are nice and toasty in our room!
