I hope you had a wonderful week, I look forward to seeing the students!
This week in the Wonders program we will answer the question, “What makes different parts of the world different?” Our spelling pattern this week is silent letters, and we will work on comparing and contrasting two different stories. As well, we will review prefixes and suffixes. In Math this week, we will continue exploring addition strategies, working to pull out important information from word problems. We will continue to identify what type of problem we are solving and which strategy best matches the problem. We are wrapping up our Landform learning this week, spending time researching with Mrs. Charles in the library, and creating landform projects in class. These will come home to you the following week.

The Readiness, First, and Second grade student have meet their goal for the school-wide playground challenge. As a reward, the students are invited to participate in a costume day this Friday, February 19th. Students are able to wear their costumes all day. Please take into consideration the appropriateness of the costume and the weather conditions as you plan your choice of costume. I look forward to ending our week in such a fun way!
I hope that you are staying warm! Thank you to the many parents who volunteered goodies and their time to make our party a success.
This week in the Wonders Program we will extend our learning from last week. With Valentine’s Day activities, and our community meeting last week, we were short on time to wrap up our learning. There will not be a spelling list/test this week. In Mathematics, we will wrap up our unit assessment on Monday, and then begin a new unit on data. We will how to collect and graph data. Later in the unit we will learn a new add larger numbers using an operation called partial sums. I will send home a link that shows the process for this addition practice. While it is different than the traditional approach to column addition we learned in school, it explains the process as a foundation for students-helping them understand why they carry the one, or borrow from a neighbor. Look for the link to come home the week after vacation. You may have heard by now that we have begun our cursive writing. The student filled out a cursive learning permit last week, using their neatest print writing. They are being issued permits to learn cursive, and we are on our way. I continue to remind the students that cursive writing will take a lot of practice, and it won’t be perfect at first. As we complete a group of letters, look for the pages to come home for your review. We have also begun our Landform Unit, reviewing continents and oceans as a foundation. This week for our STEM activity we will look at how mountains are formed using graham crackers. It is such a visual understanding of the concept, and I hope they share their excitement with you. Have a good week! I hear that we may see some snowflakes in the air this week!
In reading this week, we will study the question: How do you express yourself? We will read about a famous children’s choir and discuss other ways children can express emotion. We will review sentence punctuation, and practice the spellings for long /u/. As well, we will continue to practice main idea and detail, and generate lists of antonyms for some of our vocabulary words. Next week in math we will wrap up our unit with a two day problem solving lesson in which we add multiple two digit numbers. The students will learn two different strategies and have the chance to use the one the most prefer. As well, we will take our end of the unit assessment. We have being a new unit of writing, focusing on “how to” stories. The children have chosen an area they are an expert in, and are writing a story that shares their expertise. Our topics range from how to use a slingshot to how to put on lipstick, and just about everything in between. I am excited to share this work with you. A few reminders for this week- No school for students on Tuesday, February 9th- Primary Election Day Valentine’s Day Party on Friday, February 12th – 1:15-2:00 (thank you for the many party donations J ) |
